Alarm Lady Bulletin #31

Tough economy = spike in crimes
In January of 1980, I began my sales career with General Alarm; known at that time as Dictograph Security Systems. My husband and I had only been married a little over a year and he was serving our country in the United States Navy. Typical to most young couples we struggled financially so it was a real leap of faith for me to take a commission-only sales job. The exciting month of May in Indianapolis brought with it a big spike in crime so I had lots of opportunities to make sales (and money). Then came the last quarter of the year which began the holiday season and once again, there was a big spike in crime. More sales opportunities and more commission. Yippee! I soon figured out the pattern of rising crime in certain times and found I was quietly happy when crime was up. (I apologize!)

Now, nearly 29 years later General Alarm, Inc. still notes these cycles BUT, with the tough economy we are seeing more and more crime, unusual crime, more crime against the elderly and young people! In order to help you reduce your chance of becoming a victim of crime, I’ve listed some tips for your review. Share them with someone you care about.
  • Put your wallet in a front pocket
  • Shop in groups
  • Do not leave a handbag in the grocery cart, even for a second
  • When you are on an elevator, keep your handbag close to you
  • Do not put a home address on your luggage
  • Always be aware of your surroundings and remember where you park
  • Do not leave packages/CD’s/GPS devices etc. visible in your vehicle
  • Always lock your vehicle doors, even in your driveway
  • Keep shrubs and trees trimmed so not to hide your windows and doors
  • Do not leave outside lights on during the day
  • Leave that beautiful big diamond at home (protected by General Alarm) while you are out shopping. It reduces your chance of being a target
  • Keep your travel plans to yourself. The person at the dry cleaners, bank or the grocery store really doesn’t need to know that you’ll be gone for two weeks skiing
  • Do not open your door to ANYONE you don’t know
  • Banish the thought from your head right now that "it can’t happen to me"
Abraham Lincoln once said: “you can fool all of the people some of the time, and some of the people all of the time, but you can’t fool all of the people all of the time.” Similarly, any lock will keep out all burglars sometimes and some burglars all of the time. But no lock can keep out all burglars all the time. The fact is, if a burglar wants to get into your house, he’ll find a way to do so. But most burglars are opportunists looking for an easy job. So the best thing you can do is make it as difficult as possible to get into your house.

If any of the terrific staff of General Alarm, Inc. can assist you with security solutions, please contact us at 317-925-8915 or info@genalarm.com.

To clear the record, I really don’t like crime……..I just love selling security!

With YOUR security in mind, I am sincerely,
