Alarm Lady Bulletin #25
October News/Time Change
October is Fire Prevention Month so I thought it would be appropriate to list a few basics for your review.
For those of you, who install your own smoke alarms, please follow these guidelines.
- A smoke alarm is to be located in all bedrooms as well as outside of each separate sleeping area and on each level of a dwelling unit.
- Smoke alarms are to be mounted high on walls or ceilings (remember smoke rises). Ceiling mounted alarms should be installed at least four inches away from the nearest wall. Wall-mounted alarms should be installed four to twelve inches away from the ceiling. If you have ceilings that are pitched, install the alarm near the ceilings highest point.
- Do not install smoke alarms near windows, doors, or ducts where drafts might interfere with their operation.
- NEVER paint smoke alarms.
- Smoke alarms with a 10-year lithium battery eliminate the problem of having to frequently change batteries.
- Regularly vacuum or dust your smoke alarms as normal household pollutants can cause their sensitivity to increase and cause a false alarm.
>>General Alarm, Inc. customers for whom we have installed fire detection systems do NOT need to worry about any of this because we follow the NFPA recommendations for life safety systems WHICH INCLUDES ALL OF THE ABOVE AND MORE. I can offer more information on this per your inquiry.
One more note of interest!!!! IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ.
On November 4th, Indiana will change time when daylight savings time ends.
This change affects security systems and access control systems that have been installed since 1990. Directions for making this adjustment can be found in your owner's manual. If you do not have your owner's manual or have a question please call our Customer Service Department at 317-925-8915 or email Nancy Harman at nharman@genalarm.com.
With your security in mind, I am sincerely,
Lisa Prosser
