Alarm Lady Bulletin #20

SPECIAL SECURITY ALERT ! ! !

PLEASE test your alarm system! The preferred procedure is as follows:
  1. Contact the General Alarm Central Station at: 317-925-8915 or 800-878-7917.
  2. Provide your name and your "pass code".
  3. Inform the Dispatcher that you are going to TEST your alarm system and you will call back when you are finished to insure that the alarm signal transmitted its data properly.
  4. To TEST your alarm system, you should "ARM" your system (red light) and then open a protected access such as a door or window.
  5. After your alarm sounds, shut it off, then after a minute or so, call back in to the General Alarm Central Station and after providing your name and "pass code" ask the Dispatcher to inform you as to the TYPE of signals and/or zones that were transmitted. They will tell you things like; "I received a burglar alarm from the front door".
>>One of our customers had a break-in this past weekend. They had an older alarm system which had not been installed by General Alarm however; the system was being monitored by our General Alarm Central Station. We had talked with the customer about "updating" their alarm system as well as adding a Cellular Back-up Transmitter BUT, they felt comfortable because, their alarm system WAS working as they armed and disarmed it every day and night.

Here's what happened.

Burglars used a pipe wrench to open a solid metal door that had deadbolt locks. The alarm sounded BUT the alarm system control panel had been "taxed" by age or unknown power surges. Therefore, the power supply was not strong enough to DRIVE the sounders as well as transmit the alarm data; therefore, the alarm signal transmission was not received by our General Alarm Central Station for dispatching purposes.

IF the customer had TESTED their alarm system (as noted above), they would have known that the alarm system was not operating properly and together, we could have taken steps to prevent a loss from occurring.

I encourage you to start the New Year with the knowledge that your alarm system is working properly to protect you, your family and your property.

If you have ANY questions, please contact me or one of my experienced staff members at 317-925-8915 or 800-878-7917 or email me at alarmlady@genalarm.com.
