Alarm Lady Bulletin #19

For my last Alarm Lady Bulletin of the year, I thought my readers may benefit from a few reminders.

VoIP !!!
We have sent information out about VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) a few times, but I thought it would be a good idea to send ANOTHER reminder about some of the problems with this technology as it relates to alarm systems and YOUR security.
  1. 911 calls are a huge concern. Traditional phone equipment can trace your location. Because a VoIP call is essentially a transfer of data between two IP addresses, not PHYSICAL addresses, there is currently no way to determine where your VoIP phone call is originating from.
  2. During a blackout (power outage) a regular phone is kept in service by the current supplied through the phone line. This is not possible with IP phones, so when the power goes out, there is no VoIP phone service.
  3. Because VoIP relies on an Internet connection, your VoIP service will be affected by the quality and reliability of your broadband Internet service. Poor Internet connections and congestion can result in garbled or distorted voice quality.
DSL !!!
If you have had DSL or any other high speed connection added to your phone line your alarm signal may be negatively affected if the proper filters are not installed. Please contact Linda Smallwood in our service department at 925-8915 or lsmallwood@genalarm.com. Always remember to test your alarm system after ANYTHING changes about your phone service.

BASICS !!!
PLEASE make sure to USE your alarm system EVERY DAY and EVERY NIGHT. Your life and your property may depend on it. If you have not had your alarm system serviced in the last 12 months, please contact Linda Smallwood in our service department at 925-8915 or lsmallwood@genalarm.com.

Make sure that all alarm system users are trained on the proper use of the system. We would be happy to visit with you and the system users to conduct a review. Contact Donna Johnson at 925-8915 or djohnson@genalarm.com to make an appointment.

If you need a new Yard Sign or Decals, please let Donna know and we'll hand deliver them. Good security is a combination of things:
  • Use lighting timers instead of leaving lights on during the day.
  • Keep hedges trimmed neatly so windows and doors aren't hidden.
  • Do NOT tell everyone about your travel plans as you never know who is listening.
  • Put a business address and mobile phone number on your luggage tag.
  • Destroy hotel access cards. Do not leave them in the room or turn them in.
  • Copy your wallet contents (front and back of cards)
In the event my staff or I can be of assistance for you, please let us know. Thank you for your loyalty to General Alarm, Inc. as we prepare to enter our 43rd year in business. The employee's of General Alarm bring you 268 years of combined company experience!
