Alarm Lady Bulletin - 03
Children and Violence
On October 10, 2002, the Indiana Crime Prevention Coalition will ask children, teens and adults to turn off violent television programs, not listen to violent music, not go to violent movies, not rent violent videos and not play violent games. Instead, the day should be a unique opportunity for adults to talk with and to teach youth conflict management skills, for families to share activities, and to speak to government leaders about how violence shapes the lives of youth.
Here are some specific ideas!
- Take in a nonviolent movie, play board or card games. Go to dinner as a family and talk about “real entertainment”.
- Make sure your child or grandchild’s school has a policy requiring parental permission before showing “questionable” movies in any class, and enforces it.
- Call or write to radio and television stations and movie theaters to advise them of your decision to turn off the movies that make violence look exciting, humorous, or macho.
- Don’t buy products whose advertisements glorify physical or verbal violence. Write the manufacturer to express your concern.
- Create a memorial to victims of violent crime in your community.
Violence is a learned behavior. It can be unlearned. For just one day, let’s turn it off. October 10, 2002!
While you’re at it…make sure you’ve reduced your risks! While you’ve taken a very important step by being a customer of General Alarm, here are a few other reminders:
- If you own a firearm, make sure it is safely stored. That means unloaded, trigger-locked and in a locked gun case or pistol box, with ammunition separately locked.
- Teach your children what to do if they find a firearm or something that might be a weapon. Stop, Don’t Touch, Get Away and Tell a Trusted Adult.
- Obtain training from a certified instructor in firearms safety for everyone in the home and keep the training current.
- Review good phone and front door safety procedures with everyone in the house. Remember to go over this with babysitters and domestic help as well.
